TULSA, Okla. (KTUL) — For one man, businesses this year was one of the most successful holiday seasons they’ve seen since the start of the pandemic.

Despite the omicron variant quickly spreading across the country, people were out shopping.

“I guarantee you we had full house for seven hours were packed. I never took one hour off during December,” said Abby Alhlou, the owner of Abby’s Jewelry.

According to the Associated Press, sales from Nov. 1 through Dec. 24, were fueled by purchases of clothing and jewelry.

The owner of Mandy’s Beauty Supply, near 41st & Sheridan, says the week leading up to Christmas is when they saw their biggest numbers.

Mandy’s opened up its first location just months before the pandemic hit and a second location off 4th & Utica just this year.

“It was scary. Of course, when we opened in 2019 we never saw the pandemic coming. At first I thought for sure this is going to take us under, but Tulsa has really pulled through and really has made it a point to support black owned business,” said Amanda Woody, Owner of Mandy’s beauty supply.

According to a recent American Express study, 78% of small business owners say sales over the 2021 holiday season will determine whether their businesses survive into next year.

But for both Abby’s and Mandy’s, they’re not only banking surviving, but also looking to expand.

“We’re working on our 3rd location now,” said Woody.

According to Mastercard, holiday sales had the biggest gain at the fastest pace we’ve seen in 17 years.
